batchelder_portraitMadonna and Child, located above the Children’s Alter, is a bas-relief designed and executed by Evelyn Beatrice Longman Batchelder (1874-1954). The work was designed in 1934 in memory of Thomas Warnham Loomis, Jennie Cooke Loomis and their son Allyn Cooke Loomis.

Evelyn Beatrice Longman Batchelder was one of the most highly regarded sculptors of the early 20th century. She was a protégé then an assistant of Daniel Chester French. She was the first woman sculptor elected as a full member of the National Academy of Design.

Her other works in Windsor include the Eagle War Memorial, the Founders of Windsor Memorial, and her last work, Victory of Mercy, located at Loomis Chaffee School.
