The Rise of Ethan Conrad: A Diamond in the Rough
In a world where baseball talent is highly sought after, Ethan Conrad's story is one of determination and recognition. Despite being overlooked initially, this young athlete's journey is a testament to the power of hard work and skill.
Two prestigious Division I schools, Marist University and Albany University, extended baseball scholarships to Conrad upon his graduation from Saugerties High in 2022. However, his former coach, Michael Pugliese, believes that Conrad's talent was severely undervalued, attributing this oversight to the challenges of the COVID-19 era.
"Ethan was tremendously overlooked," Pugliese stated. "The colleges missed out on a dedicated, physically gifted player."
But here's where it gets controversial... The Chicago Cubs, one of baseball's most iconic franchises, saw something special in Conrad. They drafted him in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, an extraordinary feat considering he was coming off shoulder surgery. The Cubs' faith in Conrad is evident in the $3.56 million contract they offered him.
"The Cubs' trust means everything to me," Conrad expressed. "I'm determined to repay their faith and prove my worth."
Conrad's journey has been far from conventional. After undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum, he missed the entire 2023 season. Yet, his talent and potential were undeniable. Baseball America named him the Cubs' breakout candidate for 2026, citing his well-rounded skills, above-average hitting ability, and consistent performance across various leagues.
Tom Walter, Conrad's coach at Wake Forest University, praised him as a "five-tool player" and a "gamer." Being a five-tool player is an elite status, with only a handful of players in the league achieving this distinction, including Mookie Betts and Mike Trout.
Conrad's path to recognition was not straightforward. After graduating from Saugerties, he played for Marist College, where he led the NCAA in triples as a sophomore in 2024. It was his performance in the Cape Cod League in 2024 that truly put him on the map. Conrad earned All-Star MVP honors, batting an impressive .385 against top-tier pitching, which caught the eye of MLB scouts.
"That's when I knew I could reach new heights," Conrad recalled. "Competing in the Cape Cod League gave me the confidence to excel at Wake Forest and continue my growth as a player."
Now, fully recovered from his injury, Conrad is ready to take on the Cubs' spring training in Mesa, Arizona. He aims to start the season with one of their Class A teams and prove that he is capable of the breakout year everyone anticipates.
And this is the part most people miss... Conrad's story is a reminder that talent can sometimes be hidden, but with hard work and the right opportunities, it can shine through.
