Greek regional airports are soaring to new heights, offering travelers a diverse range of destinations and convenient connections. With the summer season fast approaching, airlines are gearing up for a busy period, and regional airports are at the forefront of this excitement. But here's where it gets controversial: while popular tourist hotspots often take center stage, regional airports are quietly becoming the unsung heroes of the travel industry.
The flight landscape is evolving, and regional airports are playing a pivotal role. For instance, Thessaloniki's Makedonia Airport is experiencing a surge in traffic, with Aegean Airlines expanding its network and introducing new routes to Dubrovnik, Milos, and Zakynthos. This expansion is a vote of confidence in the city's tourism potential. Sky Express is also joining the fray with its year-round service to Dusseldorf, three times a week.
Makedonia Airport will soon be directly connected to Helsinki, thanks to Finnair's decision to serve this route. EasyJet is also expanding its footprint in northern Greece, adding flights from Amsterdam and Bristol to Thessaloniki.
Other destinations are also seeing flight enhancements. Jet2 is expanding its network between Britain and Crete, adding new connections to Hania and capitalizing on the steady momentum of British demand. Corendon Airlines Europe is launching direct flights from Iraklio to Katowice and Warsaw, confirming the growing interest of the Polish market in Greece.
Ryanair is adding new connections from Bournemouth to Hania and Rhodes, while Air Serbia links Belgrade with Santorini. Bluebird Airways is strengthening its connectivity with Israel, flying from Tel Aviv to Santorini and Thessaloniki.
Last month, passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport reached 718,000 passengers, an 8.1% increase compared to January 2025. Domestic traffic amounted to 441,786 passengers (+10.4%), while international traffic had 276,022 passengers (+4.6%). This data highlights the growing importance of regional airports in the travel industry, and the diverse range of destinations they offer. So, the next time you're planning a trip, consider the regional airports - you might just discover your next favorite travel destination.
