Luka Doncic's 42 Points Can't Save Lakers! Kings Dominate | NBA Highlights & Analysis (2026)

Even a stellar performance from Luka Doncic wasn't enough to save the Lakers from a disappointing defeat against the Sacramento Kings. It's a tough pill to swallow when a star player drops 42 points, yet the team still falls short. This past Monday night, the Lakers found themselves on the losing end of a 124-112 scoreline at the Golden 1 Center.

Lakers coach JJ Redick, before the game, emphasized the importance of not underestimating any opponent, even a Kings team with only nine wins at the time. "We don’t look at any game as a walkover," Redick stated. But the Kings, it seemed, didn't get the memo, as they dominated the Lakers, building a commanding 20-point lead in the third quarter.

Doncic, showcasing his incredible talent, almost single-handedly kept the Lakers in the game, adding eight assists and seven rebounds to his impressive 42-point tally. But, a noticeable slowdown in the fourth quarter, possibly due to a wrapped left thigh, limited him to just two points during that crucial period.

The Kings, however, were relentless. DeMar DeRozan led the charge with 32 points, while Russell Westbrook contributed 22 points and seven assists. Their offensive efficiency was remarkable, shooting 59% from the field (making 48 of 82 shots) and sinking 17 three-pointers.

LeBron James also had a notable night, scoring 22 points while commemorating his 23rd NBA season with a special jersey patch. This patch, a tribute to his historic career, features a silhouette of his pregame chalk toss and stripes representing the Lakers, Cavaliers, and Heat – the teams he's played for. Interestingly, after each game, the patch will be removed, dated, and sent to Topps for authentication, eventually ending up in a trading card pack.

The game started promisingly for the Lakers, with Deandre Ayton winning the jump ball, leading to a quick basket by James. They even built an early 8-2 lead. But the Kings' momentum proved too strong. They trailed 59-43 late in the second quarter. Malik Monk proved to be a key player for the Kings, scoring 18 points off the bench with impressive shooting, including five three-pointers. Monk finished the game with 26 points.

James, after a hot start, finished the first half with 12 points on five-of-12 shooting. Overall, he shot eight for 17 in the game.

The Lakers face the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena. Given James' recent history of sitting out the second game of back-to-back matchups, the question remains: will he play? "We’ll see how he feels in the morning,” Redick said.

Rui Hachimura's return from a right calf injury is also uncertain. He was available on Monday but remained sidelined for his seventh consecutive game.

What do you think about the Lakers' performance? Do you think the Kings' victory was a fluke, or are they a team to watch out for? Share your thoughts in the comments!
