This Monday, February 16th, the peloton will tackle the Clásica Jaén Paraiso Interior. In its short, four-year history, this race has already seen the likes of Tadej Pogacar claim victory. For this year's edition, the headline act is Tom Pidcock, and the race organizers are already dreaming big, aiming to attract none other than the reigning cyclocross World Champion, Mathieu van der Poel, to its startlist next year. Talk about ambition!
The introduction of this Spanish one-day race onto the cycling calendar has been a resounding success. Its distinctive gravel sectors offer a departure from the typical early-season road races, presenting a unique challenge. For many riders, it's a serious objective, while for others, it serves as highly specific preparation for the iconic Strade Bianche, all while fitting neatly into the series of Spanish events held around the same time.
The race's early editions have certainly been memorable. Alexey Lutsenko triumphed in the inaugural event in 2022, followed by Tadej Pogacar's victory in 2023, which propelled the race into the global cycling spotlight. The 2024 edition saw Oier Lazkano deliver a stunning breakaway performance for the win – a victory that now carries a different weight following his suspension by the UCI. Even after Pogacar's dominant solo effort, the race has maintained its allure as a significant event within the early Spanish racing block. This year's lineup boasts the presence of Tom Pidcock, Spanish national champion Iván Romeo, and strong contenders like Jan Christen, Giulio Pellizzari, and Pello Bilbao, all of whom are considered favorites.
However, seeing Tadej Pogacar at the start line in the near future seems unlikely. Race director Pascual Momparler explained in an interview that Pogacar's desire to reduce his racing schedule this year and spend more time at home is a significant factor. While 2023 was a breakthrough year for the race, maintaining that level of star power annually is a considerable challenge.
Momparler also pointed out that if Pogacar were to begin his season earlier, the UAE Tour would be a more logical choice given his team affiliation. He added, "However, they might change their equipment next year, so if he has new wheels then, our race would be a good test." This highlights the intricate web of team strategies and equipment choices that influence rider participation.
Mathieu van der Poel: The Ultimate Target
The race director emphasized the critical need for clear and consistent communication with riders and their representatives to secure their participation, especially given the race's short history and its 1.1 UCI ranking. While not the highest tier, this ranking still contributes to the race's standing in the professional cycling world.
But here's where it gets controversial: Top riders today are incredibly selective about their calendars, meticulously choosing each race day to peak at the right moments – think Pogacar for the spring classics or Jonas Vingegaard for the Grand Tours. This means race organizers can no longer rely as heavily on riders using these events simply to build race rhythm, a practice that was more common in the past.
Therefore, attracting a rider of Mathieu van der Poel's caliber will be an immense undertaking. Yet, Momparler openly admits that this is his ultimate aspiration for the race. Van der Poel, a former gravel World Champion and current cyclocross king, wields immense influence and success in modern cycling, making him a highly sought-after figure.
Momparler is prepared to go the extra mile to bring the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider to the start line in 2027. He stated, "I haven't approached Van der Poel yet, but I have good contacts and I know how to negotiate with him." He further elaborated, "Next year, we'll try to make him an interesting and convincing offer, just like we did with Pidcock this year." This proactive approach signals a strong commitment to elevating the race's profile.
